Chapter 4 - Menelaus and Helen

Summary: (Ali)

During this chapter it begins with Telemachus and Peisistratus coming to the lands of Lacedaemon where Menelaus is hosting relatives for the different upcoming weddings of his son and daughter. They then join Menelaus’ feast in his incredible home. They begin to talk about Menelaus’ travels, Peisistratus’ brother, and Telemachus father. As they begin to talk about Odysseus, Menelaus says he mourns the fact he is gone and so Telemachus begins to cry. Helen, the wife of Menelaus comes down and says how much Telemachus looks like Odysseus with uncanny resemblance. Stories begin with how great Odysseus was like when he dressed as a poor beggar just to get beyond Trojan walls and Menelaus told about the Trojan wooden horse he used to get into Troy and cunningly kill all of the Trojans. Menelaus then talks about being stranded for 20 days on an island in Egypt after coming home from Troy where the gods stalled him. It is there he met Eidothee who gave him the advice to ask the Old man of the Sea for directions home. Before being home he asks the Old Man if the people Nester and him left behind returned safely to their homes and about Odysseus and how he was living but captured by Calypso. With that Telemachus and Peisistratus set off but before they left they were offered to stay longer with Menelaus but do not want to keep everyone waiting in Pylos. Instead he is given the ultimate keepsake, a mixing-bowl made with wrought medal created by Hephaestus and given by Phaedimus. They then took off. Back with the suitors they started to understand everything happening because they saw Mentor leave on the trip then come back at dawn. With the anger that he tricked them they summoned a plan to take twenty men and ship to meet Telemachus and murder him. Penelope, his mother, over hears her suitors and weeps and prays to Athene, Daughter of Zeus, to help her. Athene sent a ghost in the form of Penelope’s sister to comfort her and Penelope asks if her husband is alive but she will not give the answer back. The suitors take off at the end to ambush Telemachus.
